Change the color of one page in a Word document

Matt Jacobs, April 30, 2024

Changing the background color in Word on just one page can be a bit tricky but it's possible. The simplest method is to not go into the header/footer layer at all and put a shape (a rectangle) behind the text on the page. You can then set the fill color of the shape to whatever color you want. To do this, go to the Insert tab and click on the Shapes button. From there, select the Rectangle shape and draw it on the page. Resize the shape so that it covers the entire page. Right-click on the shape and select Format Shape. In the Format Shape pane, click on the Fill tab and select the color you want.

If you want to change the color of the header or footer, you'll need to go into the header/footer layer. To do this, double-click on the header or footer area. This will open the header/footer layer. Once you're in the header/footer layer, you can change the background color by clicking on the Design tab and selecting the Page Color button. From there, you can select the color you want.
